How you can support Tennis Canberra during the COVID-19 shutdown

How you can support Tennis Canberra during the COVID-19 shutdown

How you can support Tennis Canberra during the COVID-19 shutdown

Our Tennis Canberra team is determined to ride out this pandemic. From battling smoke, hail and rain it feels like we’ve been “down a break” before the year even started.

Our coaches could just laugh during the hail storm, while watching our cars get destroyed. We could just ask ourselves what was coming next? An earthquake was my guess…  A pandemic was not even a thought at the time but watching COVID-19 shutdown our business in a space of 3 days. It left us feeling empty, stressed and confused.  It was the silent storm that took the country off-guard.

For most our current Tennis Canberra coaches the goal is to return to the community we love but we face some obstacles ahead.  Restarting our programs will not be like pressing the unpause button.  We will need to re-energise, restructure and rebuild our humble community from the bottom-up.

Over the last week our team has been overwhelmed with messages of support.  Your love is enough to give us the motivation to continue the daily grind.  Like Rafa, Ash Barty and Lleyton Hewitt we are going to take inspiration from them to work even harder during the toughest of times.

HOW YOU CAN HELP… FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW

Cashflow is the major factor in the Tennis Canberra  fallout from COVID-19.  We are hoping we can limit the structural and financial losses.  As mentioned in previous updates, a couple of our coaches are not eligible for Government assistance as they are on a Temporary Visa (we really hope this rule changes but we are not holding our breath). For this reason, our team has decided looking after Coaches Pedro & Sam as our top priority as they are the future of Tennis Canberra.

We thank all those who have offered to donate funds or telling us to keep the remaining lessons that we haven’t completed.  As much as we may need these breaks we believe that if you have paid for our services we will  follow-through and complete these remaining sessions in due time.  Just be ready to hit the courts when we have the green-light. We love what we do an no money will change our passion for coaching a sport we love.

The best way to help our team is to support the “Tennis Canberra services” listed below or Pre-purchase a 2020 Spring Coaching Season Package.

Most of the sessions listed in the 2020 SPRING Season have a high chance of going ahead however, it is subject to change pending on the COVID-19 fluid situation.

PRE-PURCHASE TENNIS CANBERRA “The Return” PLAYERS SHIRT

New decade, new beginnings.  With a fresh new logo launched early in the year we knew 2020 was going to be one to remember.  We’ve always wanted to do this but never had the time but we want all our players to wear Tennis Canberra on their heart.

We are in the process of designing a special 2020 players shirt.  It will take inspiration from the events from 2020 and the new life Tennis Canberra will have once we return to the courts later in the year.

COVID 19 Update – Sunday March 22nd – Please Review

COVID 19 Update – Sunday March 22nd – Please Review

Hi Tennis Canberra Family,

With a major update from our Local and Federal Governments on Sunday March 22nd we want to be clear that the current status on Tennis Canberra programs will be fluid and can change on short notice.

Most Tennis Canberra Programs will continue for now. However, we will be adjusting some classes and competitions as some of our coaches are going back to their interstate residences before State boarders close.

We understand that everyone will have their own opinion on this matter but we will continue to comply with the measures currently put in place by our Federal and State Governments.

We encourage everyone to do what is best for them and their family and to please respect everyone’s personal decisions.

Tennis Australia has announced tennis is a low risk activity: it is outdoors, non-contact and  social distancing can be achieved.

Our goal while we are on court is to help people stay physically fit and emotionally healthy.  The Tennis Canberra team will put health first and understand if you do not feel comfortable with being on court at this present time do not stress  – we will place your program on hold and you can use this as credit when you are ready to return,

Please read all the program information and points as they will be relevant to you.

Group Lessons – Adults & Junior Lessons

  • Reducing the number of players in each class to 4-6 per coach (transitional period March 23-29th)
  • Additional classes will be held to achieve this ratio plus help us rearrange classes as 2 of our coaches have gone back to their interstate homes to be with family before the state boarders close.

Wet Weather Procedure – Follow these steps

Canberra Tennis - Weather Update - Tennis ACT

Wet Weather Procedure – Follow these steps

Wet Weather Procedure – Follow these steps

The biggest question we get when the sky turns grey is, what happens if it rains? Do we still go ahead?

The simple answer is no, however, it isn’t always black and white due to the rain coming – before, during or after a lesson.

Below are 3 scenarios that may play out.  Please read them and choose the most appropriate one depending on the day.

Scenario #1: Overnight & Morning Rain… Do afternoon classes still go ahead?

If the weather clears in time, we go ahead as normal.

Currently not raining – 1-2hours before your session…

On clearing day, assuming we are going ahead unless you hear otherwise

You will be notified by the following platforms if rain has affected any session 1-2 hours before play.

  1. E-mail (please check your e-mail)
  2. Tennis Canberra Facebook Post – Join the Page CLICK HERE
  3. Tennis Canberra Instagram Stories – @TennisCBR

Scenario #2: Rain hits within an hour of the lesson…

If you do not hear anything, assume we are going ahead as normal.  There are instances where rain is falling in one part of Canberra and not in the other.

Raining where you are within an 1 hour before your session…

You will be notified by the following platforms if rain has affected any session 1 hour before play.

  1. E-mail (please check your e-mail)
  2. Tennis Canberra Facebook Post – Join the Page CLICK HERE
  3. Tennis Canberra Instagram Stories – @TennisCBR

Please note, our coaches may be on court coaching which means we are going ahead as normal as we cannot update any information.

Scenario #3: Rain hits during a lesson…

It happens. Everyone gets prepared and the sky falls.  There is nothing we can do but get our players off court and a judgement on if we can play will depend on if the rain is clearing, the safety of the court surface and the damage the water has on our equipment.

If the coaches decide we can longer continue the session, the team will send  players home and send information to players who are scheduled to play later in the session.  An SMS will be sent to players that are scheduled to play in the next session within 30 minutes of play.

Information will be uploaded to the following platforms:

  1. E-mail (please check your e-mail)
  2. Tennis Canberra Facebook Post – Join the Page CLICK HERE
  3. Tennis Canberra Instagram Stories – @TennisCBR

Frequently Asked Question… Can I do a make up class?

Of course… Please follow the procedure to book in a make up class.  “Make-up’s” can be done at any time during the season you are currently in.  No make up’s can be done in the next season unless there are cancellations in the last week of the current season.

  1. See the Weekly Timetable CLICK HERE
  2. Identify which session you would like to do for your make up (give at least 48 hours before your intended make up session)
  3. E-mail play@tenniscanberra.com.au with the information of the session you missed plus  information about the make you wish to participate in (date, time & program)
  4. Wait for the Tennis Canberra Team to give you the green light (we will reply via e-mail)

Note to Walk-To-Tennis Participants – We ALWAYS run a walk!

For those students that participate in the After-School Walk at our selected schools.  We will always carryout a walk to the club.  This is because some parents cannot pick up their kid/s due to work constraints.  You do have options on a rain day:

  1. Pick up you child at schools – An SMS must be sent to 0416 186 121 so we can account for this student
  2. Go ahead on the walk as normal – You don’t need to let us know just see the list below to help us prepare for a wet weather walk:
  • Pack an umbrella
  • Rain Jacket or Poncho

Our team will have emergency umbrellas and ponchos however, we recommend students to have their own.

Smoke Haze & Air Quality: Procedure

Smoke Haze & Air Quality: Procedure

Smoke Haze & Air Quality: Procedure

The sad reality is that I can’t even imagine how bad the fires are in the hardest hit places.  As long as these fires keep burning Tennis Canberra will always look at safety first for all our players.  This page will update all parties on procedures & make-ups that will be held in January for Smoke related cancellations.

Scenario #1 – Smoke present before a lesson – Understand the Air Quality (AQ) readings and our procedures

The Tennis Canberra Coaches will be using the latest (usually 2-hours before a session)  PM2.5 hourly reading via ACT HEALTH CLICK HERE

If the last reading reads:

  • Unhealthy for ALL (grey bar) and the trend is going up , we will cancel the next two hours – Notification via email & SMS
  • Unhealthy for ALL and the trend is going down or unhealthy for sensitive people and the trend is going up we will cancel the next hour – Notification via email & SMS
  • Unhealthy for sensitive people and the trend is going down.  We will go ahead with the exception of Cardio Tennis and Junior (level 1) – If you have breathing difficulties we advise you to do a make up class – Notification email to Cardio & Junior Level 1 & SMS Only

Scenario #2 – Smoke Haze Hits During A Class

  • If we get on court for a session and a sudden smoke haze hits the class, a coach will immediately cancel the class and get players indoors.
  • Juniors’ parents will receive an SMS if not present and all classes scheduled after a smoked haze hit will be cancelled (this is to protect our coaches as they have been exposed to poor air quality for a longer period time)

Scenario #3 – Coach falls sick – Just a reminder that our coaches may have been on court during the day and may have been exposed to minor poor air quality for a longer period of time

  • A coach may fall sick after being outside in minimal poor air quality conditions (even though readings may be on the boarder of unhealthy for sensitive people).  Due to long hours our coaches spend outdoors in the heat and poor air, they fall under the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups Category
  • If a coach falls sick, they will notify another coach present, if any to see if they are able to finish their session by combining two classes. Their upcoming sessions will be cancelled unless a similar arrangement can be made with a healthy coach present
  • If this is not possible, the sick coach will cancel the sessions, move players inside and contact parents (if a junior class) – make up sessions will be available

Just a gentle reminder to all of our players, parents and coaches:  This issue is one that we have never dealt with before and we may get some decisions wrong.  Safety is our number one priority as we know it is a long season ahead.  We do ask for your patience and understanding as there will be many people with their own procedures and opinions.  We hope that this Tennis Canberra smoke procedure makes things clear for everyone.  We will revise this procedure if needed.  We welcome any suggestions and feedback and we hope we do not need to use it for too long.
