Newsletter: Week 1, 2020 Summer Season – Procedures & Upcoming Competitions

Week 1 was an up and down week with the end of Monday, all of Tuesday & Wednesday being cancelled due to smoke.  This newsletter is to inform all players and parents what is coming up and any procedures that may help you organise your your tennis season.  We still have space in some of our lessons, so if you know anyone that wants to join let them know (we have limited places).

Smoke Outs  – Please read the “Poor Air Quality” Procedure
We are hoping the predicated rain comes soon and we will not have to cancel anymore classes due to poor air quality.  Please review the updated “Poor Air Quality Procedure”  CLICK HERE

Make Lessons: If you miss a lesson (sick/away) or a lesson is cancelled by Mother Nature…
If you miss a lesson for any reason you are welcome to do a make up lesson any time (in the same season).
 1) Visit our WEEKLY TIMETABLE – CLICK HERE
 2) Identify a lesson you can attend outside your normal sessions (those sessions “full” will be tough to fit you in) – Make sure it is at least 36 hours before your intend session
 3) Email play@tenniscanberra.com.au the session you wish to attend
 4) We will reply with confirmation

TENNIS RACQUETS – If you intend on buying one from us…

Those that intend on buying a racquet from us… Ask your coach to put in an order at the end of the session.  When filling out the online form for a racquet it just helps us understand if you need a racquet (you don’t actually pay for one).  We recommend you try ours racquets first (both adults and juniors) and we will order your racquet for the following week.  We get racquets cheaper from our sponsors and we get you the racquet right for you.
– Junior special – $35
– Adult special – $150
– Special Order (high-end racquets speak to your coach)

Last Call For Adult Social Doubles Players – Wednesday Social Competition (City & North Canberra)

SIGN UP – ACT Junior Team Tennis – Saturday Feb 15th @ Old Parliament House (Grading Week) – Junior Level 4 – 6

I will be sending little e-mail over the next week with little updates as players are still signing up.  Week 1 is always an exciting week for us and we are making all our little adjustments for week 2.  Not all classes will be perfect with new players entering the session but will do out very best to sort out any issues you may have.
Have a good rest of the week and we cannot wait to get back on court!

Bushfire Relief Fundraisers & Tennis Canberra Open Days

With the South Coast closely linked to Canberra it really hits home when you think about devastation many people went through over the New Year period.  I’ve had friends lose their home in Mogo and it breaks my hear hearing about the devastation in these communities.

The fight is not over and our thoughts are with our Fire Fighters on the frontline not just in NSW but all over Australia.

Our Tennis Canberra family is one of love and want to help where we can.  I have talked to our coaches and for the next month we will be holding Saturday Fundraisers & Tennis Canberra Open Days to help our NSW Rural Fire Service & WIRES.

The Tennis Canberra coaches will be running Bushfire Relief Tennis Lessons & Open Days to raise funds for the NSW Rural Fire Services (RFS) & WIRES.

The best thing about Tennis Canberra coaching programs is our coaches run lesson at venues all around the ACT.  This means the people of the Capital can play with Canberra’s best coaches at a club near you.

Learn new skills, get healthy and meet new friends. Tennis is just one of those games you can play forever.  Join the thousands of Canberrans and join a Tennis Canberra program today.

Looking for an after-work hit?

Adults that want to play after work the best sessions would be at Old Parliament House, Reid Tennis Club, Turner Tennis Club or Barton Tennis Club.  These sessions are the closest tennis venues to the major working hubs of Canberra.

We offer Adult Skills sessions for all levels.  If you have never touched a racquet before or a seasoned athlete I recommend to bring a few friends and enjoy an evening hit!

Our team heads out with our players for a social dinner every couple of weeks so we can relax and enjoy the company of our players and friends.

Living in Gungahlin or Tuggeranong?

Those living in Gungahlin play at Majura Tennis Club (Dickson). This Tennis Canberra Club is Gungahlin’s closest coaching service providers.   Majura Tennis Club offers junior group sessions on Monday, Thursday & Saturday for the North Canberra and Gungahlin region.

In the 1990s & early 2000s Tuggeranong was the powerhouse of tennis in the Capital. With the closure of Tuggeranong Tennis Centre, tennis has been on a steady decline. Until now…  Right in the heart of Tuggeranong, the Active Leisure Centre in Erindale holds junior lessons every Friday!

Does your kids go to any of these schools?

Turner Primary, Telopea Park & North Ainslie Primary have been lucky enough to participate in an after-school walk-to-tennis initiative.  This has helped so many parents and many parents cannot bring their kids to tennis right after school.  At the moment these are the only schools running this program however, with the success of the afternoon walk to the courts our team is looking for more options to get the kids from school to the courts.

Tennis Canberra junior Harry Turner wins dream trip to Australian Open

The Wanniassa Hills Primary School student only started playing tennis 12 months ago after seeing photos of his grandfather playing and being inspired to get on the court.

“I started playing because of my grandpa. He played tennis and it looked really fun, so I gave it a go,” Turner said.

“When my mum told me I was nominated it was the happiest day of my life. I thought I had won the lottery or something.”

Thanks to our Kiwi Tennis Coach Tom Sizeland

Thanks to our Kiwi Tennis Coach Tom Sizeland

The Tennis Canberra community is extremely lucky to have many coaches and we appreciate both – coaches who work 8 hours a day and coaches that help out when we need them.  Tom Sizeland was inducted into the Tennis Canberra coaching team this year and we were lucky to have him.

From a junior Kiwi tennis player to a recent US College Tennis Graduate, Tom is down in Canberra studying to become a doctor at the Australian National University.  Tom is currently preparing to take on the medical exams for the next 6 weeks, which means that he will not be on court coaching for the rest of 2018.  We do wish him all the best and, hopefully, with these tough exams out of the way he will be back in action in 2019.
