Aussie Open Summer Of Tennis 2019 – Your Guide

Welcome to the 2019 Summer of Tennis – A message from Robbie Manzano

2019 will be a big year for Tennis Canberra. The team has over 120 weekly sessions running during the Summer Season so we are really looking forward to the challenge.  Our coaches learnt so much last year and have already implemented strategies so our players, coaches and families have the best experience.

I welcome all the new players to Tennis Canberra and cannot wait to introduce you to our humble tennis community.  Tennis is a sport your can play for life and a sport that brings people together.

Below is information on how you can get involved this summer and my predictions for this year’s Australian Open.

Play Tennis Canberra – Learn A Sport You Can Play For Life

There are a range of tennis coaching and competition options at Tennis Canberra.  We have some fun events for both adults and juniors.

Aussie Open Fever – Who to look out for

It begins! The best players in the world have hit our shores.  It is an exciting time for tennis in Australia with Alex di Minaur winning the Sydney International and Ash Barty coming close to taking out the Women’s title.

Aussie Pick: I see Ash Barty making the second week despite a tough encounter with former Roland Garros Champion Ostapenko in the 3rd round. I am expecting inform Alex Di Minuar to make the 3rd where he will have nothing to lose against Rafa Nadal.

Don’t forget about John Peers: With our singles players making headlines, we cannot forget about John Peers. Already a Doubles Australian Open Champion, Peers and Kontinen have formed a dangerous pairing over the last couple of years and are my pick to win this year’s Men’s Doubles title.

Wishing Canberra Tennis Representatives Alison Bai & Nick Kyrgios the best of luck:

At his best Nick can beat anyone in the world.  It has been a slow start to the season but we cannot rule him out with the weapons he possesses.  Kyrgios has a tough first round match against 16th seed Milos Raonic but I expect him to serve big and take his chances when Raonic blinks on his serve.

Canberra’s Alison Bai has received a wild card in to the Womens Doubles.  Partnering up with Zoe Hives (who has been on fire this summer), I give them a good chance to get through the important first round and compete further into the draw.

Will you be in Melbourne for the 2019 Australian Open? Meet Up – Saturday 19th

For the 2019 Aussie Open, the Tennis Canberra coaches and friends will be meeting up for a dinner Saturday 19th at Chin Chin.  Our coaches will be watching matches from Thursday – Sunday (January 17th-20th).  Join the Facebook Event and stay posted with our movements – we would love to see you!

  • You don’t need to spend 3+ hours to complete a match
  • Parents are able to experience mid-week competition and juggle the busy family schedule

  • Frantic, fast & fun

ACT Junior Team Tennis – A Capital Game Changer

ACT Junior Team Tennis – A Capital Game Changer

ACT Junior Team Tennis – A Capital Game Changer

There is nothing better than playing in a team and ACT Junior Team Tennis a real game changer in the Territory.  Tennis is perceived as a individual or partnered sport, but even today professionals tennis players cherish the moments when they get an oppourtunity to play in a team environment.

Just watch any Federation or Davis Cup, and recently added Laver Cup (Team Europe vs. Team World) or International Tennis Premier League (ITPL) and understand that nothing beats playing in a team.

Introducing a team format to juniors causes some complications as there are a variety or skill differences, friendship considerations and a balance on competition-learning outcomes.  This leads to frustration for the player, parent and coaches.

This is where Junior Team Tennis comes in.  A format that encourages high level competition for seasoned and older junior players, plus inviting new players to competition, whilst keeping them all in one team.

Canberra Junior Team Tennis ACT - Competitions - Juniors
Canberra Team Tennis - South Canberra - Champions

Junior Tennis Team’s are made up of a variety of abilities & ages, however, all players match up against players around their standard.  This allows:

  • Siblings to play in the same team – single trips for parents
  • Friends to play in the same team – makes competition more enjoyable
  • Chances to build many more friendships
  • Experience playing at different venues
  • Get a competition environment with the support of team mates
  • Tennis Coach Supervisors to take notes and create lesson plans depending on the outcomes

The improvement from all our players is evident each week.  With designated training weeks and a fun game week at the start and end of each season players really get to interact with players not just in their team but all the players in the competition.  This is Canberra’s first interactive weekly competition and with the popularity, social and physical benefits Junior Team Tennis will remain see many juniors use this competition as a launch pad for their future development.

Update: All Tuggeranong on Friday December 14th Classes have been cancelled due to rain.  We have had trouble with our new post not coming up on mobile devices so we have used the post from yesterday.

Update: 4:39pm the Lightning and Thunder is on it’s way.  With a shower a present at Turner it is safe to say that we will be cancelled for today as the weather is getting worse.

Update 4:30pm – The courts are playable so we are going to give it a go as it looks like there is a window from now until 6pm where there is little rain.  The rain looks like it will hit around 6pm so these sessions are looking very unlikely.

Update: 3:30pm – All 4pm sessions are cancelled.  Update for 5pm will be made at 4:30pm.

Update: 2:44pm – Morning and midday rain, sunny from 1-2:40pm now rain,  and more rain scheduled.  We were trying to be optimistic however, it is not looking likely any classes will go ahead.  For now our 3:30pm sessions are cancelled and 4pm is looking extremely unlikely (update at 3:15pm) as it has just started raining again.  The walk to tennis program from North Ainslie Primary will continue as always with games scheduled inside the Clubhouse.
