With the South Coast closely linked to Canberra it really hits home when you think about devastation many people went through over the New Year period.  I’ve had friends lose their home in Mogo and it breaks my hear hearing about the devastation in these communities.

The fight is not over and our thoughts are with our Fire Fighters on the frontline not just in NSW but all over Australia.

Our Tennis Canberra family is one of love and want to help where we can.  I have talked to our coaches and for the next month we will be holding Saturday Fundraisers & Tennis Canberra Open Days to help our NSW Rural Fire Service & WIRES.

The Tennis Canberra coaches will be running Bushfire Relief Tennis Lessons & Open Days to raise funds for the NSW Rural Fire Services (RFS) & WIRES.

Looking for an after-work hit?

Adults that want to play after work the best sessions would be at Old Parliament House, Reid Tennis Club, Turner Tennis Club or Barton Tennis Club.  These sessions are the closest tennis venues to the major working hubs of Canberra.

Living in Gungahlin or Tuggeranong?

Those living in Gungahlin play at Majura Tennis Club (Dickson). This Tennis Canberra Club is Gungahlin’s closest coaching service providers.   Majura Tennis Club offers junior group sessions on Monday, Thursday & Saturday for the North Canberra and Gungahlin region.

In the 1990s & early 2000s Tuggeranong was the powerhouse of tennis in the Capital. With the closure of Tuggeranong Tennis Centre, tennis has been on a steady decline. Until now…  Right in the heart of Tuggeranong, the Active Leisure Centre in Erindale holds junior lessons every Friday!

Does your kids go to any of these schools?

Turner Primary, Telopea Park & North Ainslie Primary have been lucky enough to participate in an after-school walk-to-tennis initiative.  This has helped so many parents and many parents cannot bring their kids to tennis right after school.  At the moment these are the only schools running this program however, with the success of the afternoon walk to the courts our team is looking for more options to get the kids from school to the courts.

Tennis Canberra junior Harry Turner wins dream trip to Australian Open

The Wanniassa Hills Primary School student only started playing tennis 12 months ago after seeing photos of his grandfather playing and being inspired to get on the court.

“I started playing because of my grandpa. He played tennis and it looked really fun, so I gave it a go,” Turner said.

“When my mum told me I was nominated it was the happiest day of my life. I thought I had won the lottery or something.”

Thanks to our Kiwi Tennis Coach Tom Sizeland

Thanks to our Kiwi Tennis Coach Tom Sizeland

The Tennis Canberra community is extremely lucky to have many coaches and we appreciate both – coaches who work 8 hours a day and coaches that help out when we need them.  Tom Sizeland was inducted into the Tennis Canberra coaching team this year and we were lucky to have him.

From a junior Kiwi tennis player to a recent US College Tennis Graduate, Tom is down in Canberra studying to become a doctor at the Australian National University.  Tom is currently preparing to take on the medical exams for the next 6 weeks, which means that he will not be on court coaching for the rest of 2018.  We do wish him all the best and, hopefully, with these tough exams out of the way he will be back in action in 2019.

Where to play tennis? Your 2018 Summer Guide – ACT

We have seen it all and the Australian Open hasn’t even started.  Huge win by our Canberra boy Nick Kyrgios in the Brisbane International.  Ash Barty showed why she considered one of the top women players in the world (even with a two-year break from the sport), and how could forget about the Demon Alex Di Minaur.  What an incredible two week for the youngster making the semis in Brisbane and the final in Sydney.

With a successful Pro Tour in Canberra and upcoming Federation Cup tie also around the corner tennis courts will be filled with new players eager to give tennis a crack.

To make it easy for you I’ve listed a handful of playing options that will suit anyones situation.  Give tennis a go this summer and
